Course Requirements

For the Ph.D. degree, a minimum of 90 graduate quarter credits beyond the M.S. degree (135 quarter credits beyond the B.S. degree for Direct Route to the Ph.D.) including 45 credits for doctoral dissertation research must be completed. At least 15 credit hours of classroom coursework at 700 or higher level must be completed from the course categories marked as Primary. Courses from Optional categories may be done without written consent of the advisor but courses from other categories need advisor's written consent to be placed in student's file.

The following table has columns pertaining to the degree program and track that we offer in our department and rows corresponding to different course groups. The entries in the table's cells are to be interpreted as follows:

  • "Primary" in a cell means that the courses in this course group (row) are primary to the degree program (column) and students pursuing this degree program must complete some minimum number of credits from their primary course groups.
  • "Optional" in a cell means that the courses in this course group (row) can be taken for this degree program and will be counted towards the degree requirements.
  • An empty cell means that the courses in this course group may be counted for this degree program only if a written permission to do the course has been obtained from the permanent advisor of the student, and placed in student's file in the graduate office.
  • If a cell says "min 1 course" then that degree program requires that a student complete at least one course from this course group.
